The Order of EDMOND JOHN GLYNN Esquire and ROBERT WALKER
Clerk two of His Majesty’s Justices of the Peace in and
for the said County one whereof is of the Quorum and
both residing next unto the limits of the Parish Church
within the Parish of Saint Cleer in the said County made
the thirteenth day of May in the first year of the reign
of his said Majesty King George the Fourth and in the
year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty
concerning a female Bastard Child lately born in the
parish of Saint Cleer aforesaid of the Body of GRACE
HENDER singlewoman.
Whereas it hath appeared unto us the said Justices as
well upon the complaint of the Churchwardens and
Overseers of the Poor of the said parish of Saint Cleer
as upon the Oath of the said GRACE HENDER that she the
said GRACE HENDER on the fourth day of April now last
past was delivered of a female bastard Child in the
parish of Saint Cleer aforesaid, and that the said
bastard Child is chargeable to the said parish of Saint
Cleer and further that SAMUEL STEPHENS late of the said
parish of Saint Cleer in the said County of Cornwall
Labourer did beget the said bastard Child on the body of
her the said GRACE HENDER And whereas it hath further
appeared unto us the said Justices that the reasonable
charges and expences incident to the Birth of the said
Bastard Child amount to the sum of Two Pounds and that
the reasonable costs of apprehending and securing the
said SAMUEL STEPHENS together with the costs of the
order of Filiation amount to the further sum of three
pounds one shilling and six pence the same having been
duly ascertained before us the said Justices on the Oath
of RICHARD KINGDON one of the Overseers of the poor of
the parish of Saint Cleer aforesaid And whereas the said
SAMUEL STEPHENS hath been duly summoned to appear before
us to shew cause why he should not be adjudged to be the
reputed Father of the said bastard Child but hath shewed
no sufficient cause We therefore upon examination of the
cause and circumstances of the Premises as well upon the
Oath of the said GRACE HENDER as otherwise do hereby
adjudge him the said SAMUEL STEPHENS to be the reputed
father of the said bastard Child and do hereby allow the
said sum of Two Pounds for the said charges and expences
and the said sum of three pounds one shilling and six
pence for the said costs ascertained as aforesaid to
have been incurred by the said Overseers of the said
parish of Saint Cleer in respect of the said bastard
Child.
And thereupon we do order as well for the better relief
of the said parish of Saint Cleer as for the
sustentation and relief of the said Bastard Child that
the said SAMUEL STEPHENS shall and do forthwith upon
Notice of this our Order pay or cause to be paid to the
Overseers of the Poor of the said parish of Saint Cleer
or to some or one of them the said sums of Two pounds
and Three pounds one shilling and sixpence for and
towards the said charges expenses and costs; and the
further sum of two shillings for the maintenance of the
said bastard Child to the time of making this our Order
And we do hereby further Order that the said SAMUEL
STEPHENS shall likewise pay or cause to be paid to the
Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said
parish of Saint Cleer for the time being or to some or
one of them the sum of Two shillings weekly and every
week from the present time for and towards the Keeping
sustentation and maintenance of the said bastard Child
for and during so long time as the said bastard Child
shall be chargeable to the said parish of Saint Cleer
And we do further Order that the said GRACE HENDER shall
also pay or cause to be paid to the Churchwardens and
Overseers of the poor of the said parish of Saint Cleer
for the time being or to some or one of them the sum of
one shilling weekly and every week so long as the said
bastard Child shall be chargeable to the said parish of
Saint Cleer in case she shall not nurse and take care of
the said Child herself.

Whereas Information and Complaint, upon Oath, have been
made before me WILLIAM JOPE Esquire one of his Majesty’s
Justices of the Peace for the said County, by RICHARD
SIBLY one of the Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of
Saint Cleer in the County of Cornwall that, by an Order
under the Hands and Seals of EDMOND JOHN GLYNN Esquire
and ROBERT BULLER Clerk two of his Majesty’s Justices of
the Peace in and for the said County of Cornwall and
both residing next unto the Limits of the Parish Church
within the Parish of Saint Cleer in the said County one
whereof is of the Quorum, SAMUEL STEPHENS OF THE SAID
PARISH OF Saint Cleer labourer is adjudged to be the
reputed Father of a female Bastard Child, born of the
Body of GRACE HENDER single woman in the said Parish of
Saint Cleer; and that in and by such Order it is ordered
that the said SAMUEL STEPHENS shall a full notice? of
the said order for the purposes therein mentioned pay or
cause to be paid to the overseers of the poor of the
aforesaid parish of Saint Cleer or to some or one of
them the several sums of 2GBP and 3-1-6 GBP and the sum
of 2/- for the maintenance of the said child up to the
making of the said order and should also pay the further
sum of 2/- week by and every Week from that time forward
towards the maintenance of the said Bastard child so
long as the said Bastard child should be of ?--------?
to the said parish of Saint Cleer and further that the
said parish of Saint Cleer is liable to the maintenance
of such bastard child but that notwithstanding he the
said Samuel Stephens hath had due Notice of the said
Order, yet he the said Samuel Stephens hath not observed
nor performed the same, and that there is now due and
owing from the Samuel Stephens unto the Churchwardens
and Overseers of the Poor of the said Parish of Saint
Cleer from the thirteenth Day of May One Thousand Eight
Hundred and Twenty to the Fourth Day of December Instant
by and under the said Order, the Sum of Eight pounds and
Six Shillings
And whereas the said Richard Sibly one of the Overseers
of the Poor of the Parish of Saint Cleer aforesaid, in
Order to indemnify the said Parish of Saint Cleer in the
Premises, hath applied to me to issue out my Warrant for
the apprehending of the said Samuel Stephens and to
bring him before me, or some other of his Majesty’s
Justices of the Peace for the said County of Cornwall to
answer the said Complaint. Herein fail you not.
