The Examination of JANE HARRIS of the parish of St. Cleer in the said County, single Woman, taken on Oath, before us, two of His Majesty’s Justices of the Peace, in and for the said County this first Day of December in the Year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and thirty two who saith, That on the thirty first Day of October now last past, at Newlands in the Parish of St. Cleer in the County aforesaid, she was delivered of a female Bastard Child, and that the said Bastard Child is likely to become chargeable to the said Parish, and that RICHARD GILBERT the younger of St. Cleer in the said County, Laborer, did get her with Child of the said Bastard Child.

The Order of WILLIAM JOPE and JOHN LYNE Esquires two of his Majesty’s Justices of the Peace in and for the said County, one whereof is of the Quorum, and both residing next unto the Limits of the Parish Church within the Parish of Saint Cleer in the said County, made the first Day of December One Thousand Eight Hundred and thirty two concerning a female Bastard Child lately born in the Parish of Saint Cleer aforesaid, of the Body of JANE HARRIS single Woman.

Whereas it hath appeared unto us the said Justices, as well upon the Complaint of the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said parish of Saint Cleer as upon the Oath of the said JANE HARRIS that she the said JANE HARRIS on the thirty first Day of October now last past, was delivered of a female Bastard Child at Newhouse in the Parish of Saint Cleer in the said County, and that the said Bastard Child is become chargeable to the said Parish of Saint Cleer and further that RICHARD GILBERT the younger of the said Parish in the said County laborer did beget the said Bastard Child on the Body of her the said JANE HARRIS And whereas the said RICHARD GILBERT hath appeared before us, in Pursuance of our Summons for that Purpose, but hath not shewed any sufficient Cause why he the said RICHARD GILBERT shall not be the reputed Father of the said Bastard Child. We therefore, upon Examination of the Cause and Circumstances of the Premises, as well upon the Oath of the said JANE HARRIS as otherwise do hereby adjudge him the said RICHARD GILBERT the younger to be the reputed Father of the said Bastard Child And thereupon we do order, as well for the better Relief of the said Parish of Saint Cleer as for the Sustentation and Relief of the said Bastard Child that the said RICHARD GILBERT the younger shall and do forthwith, upon Notice of this our Order, pay or cause to be paid to the said Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said Parish of Saint Cleer or to some or one of them, the Sum of Five Pounds for and towards the Lying-in of the said JANE HARRIS and the Maintenance of the said Bastard Child to the Time of making this our Order, and for the Charges and Expences incurred prior to the said Order of Filiation being made, and incidient to the obtaining of the said Order, as ascertained on Oath. And we do also hereby further order, that the said RICHARD GILBERT shall likewise pay or cause to be paid to the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said parish of Saint Cleer for the Time being, or to some or one of them, the Sum of One Shilling and eight pence weekly and every Week from this present Time, for and towards the Keeping, Sustentation, and Maintenance of the said Bastard Child for and during so long Time as the said Bastard Child shall be chargeable to the said Parish of Saint Cleer. And we do further order, that the said JANE HARRIS shall also pay or cause to be paid to the said Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said parish of Saint Cleer for the Time being, or to some or one of them, the Sum of Ten Pence weekly and every Week so long as the said Bastard Child shall be chargeable to the said Parish of Saint Cleer in Case she shall not nurse and take care of the said Child herself. Given under our Hands and Seals the Day and Year first above written.

The Information and Complaint of CHARLES LAWRY one of the Overseers of the poor of the Parish of Saint Cleer in the said County taken before me JOHN LYNE Esquire one of His Majesty’s Justices of the peace for the said County the fifth day of August in the year of our Lord 1833.

Who on his Oath saith that by an order made the first day of December in the year 1832 under the hands and Seals of WILLIAM JOPE and JOHN LYNE Esquires two of His Majesty’s Justices of the peace in and for the said County of Cornwall and both living next unto the limits of the Parish Church within the Parish of Saint Cleer in the said County one whereof is of the quorum. RICHARD GILBERT the younger of the Parish of Saint Cleer aforesaid laborer is adjudged to be the reputed father of a female Bastard Child born of the body of JANE HARRIS Singlewoman in the said parish of Saint Cleer And that in and by such Order it is ordered that the said RICHARD GILBERT should among other things pay or cause to be paid to the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said parish of Saint Cleer for the time being or to some or one of them the sum of one shilling and eight pence weekly and every week from the time of making the said Order for the keeping and maintenance of the said Bastard Child so long as the said Bastard Child should be chargeable to the said parish of Saint Cleer; but that notwithstanding he the said RICHARD GILBERT hath had due notice of the said order yet he the said RICHARD GILBERT hath not observed nor performed the same and there is now due and owing from the said RICHARD GILBERT unto the churchwardens and overseers of the poor of the said parish of Saint Cleer from the twenty seventh day of December One thousand eight hundred and thirty two to the first day of August One thousand eight hundred and thirty three by and under the said Order the Sum of Two pounds, Eleven Shillings and eight pence And that payment of the said Sum of Two pounds Eleven Shillings and eight pence hath been demanded of him the said RICHARD GILBERT but that he hath neglected and refused to pay the same And this Informant prayeth justice in the premises.
