The Examination of ELIZABETH BURRIDGE of the parish of Saint Cleer in the said County singlewoman taken on Oath before us WILLIAM JOPE and JOHN LYNE Esquires two of his Majesty’s Justices of the peace in and for the County aforesaid this 30th day of July in the year of our Lord 1834

This Examinant on her Oath saith that in or about the month of April last she was delivered of a male Bastard Child within the said parish of Saint Cleer in the said County (which child is now living and likely to become chargeable to the said parish) and that one WILLIAM CRABB of the parish of Saint Cleer aforesaid Labourer is the father of the said Male Bastard Child.

The Order of WILLIAM JOPE and JOHN LYNE Esquires two of his Majesty’s Justices of the Peace in and for the said County, one whereof is of the Quorum and both residing next unto the Limits of the Parish Church within the Parish of Saint Cleer in the said County, made the thirtieth day of July One Thousand Eight Hundred and thirty four concerning a Male Bastard Child lately born in the Parish of Saint Cleer aforesaid, of the Body of ELIZABETH BURRIDGE single Woman.

Whereas it hath appeared unto us the said Justices, as well upon the Complaint of the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said Parish of Saint Cleer as upon the Oath of the said ELIZABETH BURRIDGE that she the said ELIZABETH BURRIDGE in or about the month of April now last past, was delivered of a Male Bastard Child in the Parish of Saint Cleer in the said County, and that the said Bastard Child is chargeable to the said Parish of Saint Cleer, and further that WILLIAM CRABB of the Parish of Saint Cleer aforesaid did beget the said Bastard Child on the Body of her the said ELIZABETH BURRIDGE And whereas it hath been duly proved to us upon Oath that the said WILLIAM CRABB hath been duly summoned to appear before us the said Justices to the end that we might examine into the cause and circumstances of the said premises but he the said WILLIAM CRABB hath neglected to appear before us according to such summons. We therefore, upon Examination of the Cause and Circumstances of the Premises, as well upon the Oath of the said ELIZABETH BURRIDGE as otherwise, do hereby adjudge him the said WILLIAM CRABB to be the reputed Father of the said Bastard Child. And thereupon we do order, as well for the better Relief of the said Parish of Saint Cleer as for the Sustentation and Relief of the said Bastard Child that the said WILLIAM CRABB shall and do forthwith, upon Notice of this our Order, pay or cause to be paid to the said Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said parish of Saint Cleer or to some or one of them, the Sum of Two pounds for and towards the Lying-in of the said ELIZABETH BURRIDGE and the Maintenance of the said Bastard Child to the Time of making this our Order, and for the Charges and Expences incurred prior to the said Order of Filiation being made, and incident to the obtaining of the said Order, as ascertained on Oath. And we do also hereby further order, that the said WILLIAM CRABB shall likewise pay or cause to be paid to the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said Parish of Saint Cleer for the Time being, or to some or one of them, the Sum of One shilling and eight pence weekly and every Week from this present Time, for and towards the Keeping, Sustentation and Maintenance of the said Bastard Child for and during so long Time as the said Bastard Child shall be chargeable to the said Parish of Saint Cleer. And we do further order, that the said ELIZABETH BURRIDGE shall also pay or cause to be paid to the said Churchwardens and Overseers of the poor of the said Parish of Saint Cleer for the Time being, or to some or one of them, the Sum of ten pence weekly and every Week, so long as the said Bastard Child shall be chargeable to the said Parish of Saint Cleer in Case she shall not nurse and take care of the said Child herself. Given under our Hands and Seals the Day and Year first above written.
