Major Richard Thomas Peardon OLVER

OBITUARY
Major Richard Thomas Peardon Olver, aged 81 years, who died at his home
in Falconer street, North Fitzroy, on Saturday, came to Australia from
Cornwall 54 years ago. In 1900 he became associated with Mr. G. Little
in the partnership of Little and Olver, with a chain of 15 grocers’
shops. The partnership was dissolved in 1909, but Major Olver continued
in business under the name of R. Olver and Sons Pty. Ltd. He was
president of the Grocers’ Association of Victoria from 1915 to 1917, and
was a foundation member and vice-president of the Grocers’ Federation of
Australia. As a major in the Victorian Rangers he was an associate of
the late Colonel Tom Price and Major Eddy. Major Olver was a leading
member of the Methodist Church. For many years he was a conference
representative, local preacher, and Bible class leader, and held almost
every office open to a layman. He leaves a widow and three
son—Councillor William Olver, Lieutenant H. Olver, and Lieutenant F.
Olver—and one daughter, Mrs. G. F. Green, Ivanhoe.
The funeral will take place this afternoon at the Melbourne General
Cemetery, Carlton, after a service at the Methodist Church, Nicholson
street, North Fitzroy.

William John OLVER

OBITUARY
Mr William John Olver, who died on Saturday evening, was a native of
Cornwall. He came to Australia 57 years ago and lived at Murtoa. Later
he became a member of the staff of W. C. Thomas, flourmillers, of
Newport. Mr. Olver was an active member of the Methodist Church at
Coburg. He has left a widow and three children, Mr. S. Olver, of
Werribee, Mr. A. Olver, of Sassafras; and Mrs. C. Richards, of Kongwak.
The funeral will leave his residence, 35 Hudson Street, Coburg, at 1
p.m. to-day, for a short service at the Methodist Church, and will then
proceed to the Melbourne General Cemetery, Carlton.

METHODIST PASTOR DEAD
Rev. James Rowe, One of Most Widely Known of Middle West Dead in
Chicago.
Chicago, April 1.—The Rev. James Rowe, the most widely known clergyman
of the Methodist Episcopal denomination in Chicago and the middle west,
died at his home yesterday.
Dr. Rowe was the executive head of the Chicago home missionary and
church extension society of the church. It is estimated that he raised
$2,000,000 for church purposes.
Dr. Rowe’s first serious illness occurred three years ago.
Last Sunday he was under appointment to go to Pekin, Ill., to raise a
debt of several thousand dollars, but was obliged to give up the trip.
Dr. Rowe was born in Gunnislake, Cornwall, England, May 28, 1860. He
came to America when he was 20 years of age. He was graduated at Garrett
Biblical institute, Evanston, in 1892. He was pastor of the Humboldt
Park church five years and of Garfield Park church eight years. in
1903-’06 he was district superintendent of the Joliet district and lived
in Aurora, Ill.
