Settlement Paper for Elizabeth & Philip James
otherwise Harding, dated 26 Apr 1742
1. To the Church-wardens and
Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Fremington in the County of
Devon as also to the Church-wardens and Overseers of the Poor of
the Parish of St Breok otherwise St Brague in the County of
Cornwall These
Whereas Complaint hath been made by you the Church-wardens and Overseers
of the Poor of Fremington aforesaid, unto us whose Hands and
Seals are hereunto set, two of his Majesty’s Justices of the
Peace (one being of the Quorum) for the said County of Devon
That Elizabeth James otherwise Harding and Philip James otherwise
Harding lately intruded themselves into your said Parish
of Fremington there to inhabit as Parishioners contrary to the
Laws relating to the Settlement of the Poor, and are become Chargeable
there : And whereas upon due Examination and Enquiry made into the
Premises by us the said Justices, it appears unto us, and we accordingly
adjudge, that the said Elizabeth James otherwise Harding and Philip
James otherwise Harding are likely to
become Chargeable to the said Parish of Fremington and that
their last legal Place of Settlement was in the said Parish of
St Breok otherwise St Brague where they ought to be
removed, as the Law in that Case ....
These are therefore in his Majesty’s Name to order and require
you the Church-wardens and Overseers of the Poor of Fremington
aforesaid, That you, or some of you, do forthwith remove and convey the
said Elizabeth James otherwise Harding and Philip James otherwise
Harding from your said Parish of Fremington to the Parish
of St Breok otherwise St Brague aforesaid, and them
deliver to the Church-wardens and Overseers of the Poor there, or some,
or one of them, together with this our Warrant or Order, or a true Copy
hereof; whereby they are likewise Required in his Majesty’s Name, and by
Virtue of the Statutes in such Case made, forthwith to receive the said
Elizabeth James otherwise Harding and Philip James otherwise Harding
into their said Parish of St Breok otherwise St Brague and
provide for them as their own Parishioners according to Law.
Given under our Hands and Seals, the twenty sixth Day of
Aprill in the Eighteenth Year of the Reign of our
Sovereign Lord George the Second King over Great Britain, and
so forth, and in the Year of our Lord God One Thousand, Seven Hundred
& forty two

incomplete?, and significance unclear)
a Certificate on Stamp was taken on 3 ?-- Sixpenny Stamp paper by the
Parish Officers of Fremington when Eliz. Harding was sent to Bridwell
for 10 years an Order from the Justices for that purpose to prove
Harding marriage with Ann Hookway
