Over the weekend of 10th and 11th March 2007 , St Keverne Methodist Church will be celebrating its Centenary. Other events will follow in 2007, with a lunch on 16th February 2008 to conclude the Centenary year.
Although the first Methodist chapel was opened in St Keverne in 1793, very little is known about it or its location. The chapel at St Keverne, which is always referred to as the “old” chapel, was built in 1839 and remained in use until it was badly damaged by fire on 11 th November 1905 .
The present Methodist chapel was opened in March 1907 with great rejoicing and it is the centenary of this building that is being celebrated rather than the founding of Methodism in St Keverne parish.
As part of the Centenary an exhibition of memorabilia, including a large number of old photographs and other materials, will be staged over the anniversary weekend and at other times throughout the year. There will be well over a hundred photographs of people and events ranging in date from the late 19th Century to the present time. Other events will include a Flower Festival in May 2007 and a traditional Sunday School Tea Treat in June.
In addition, Terry Moyle has produced a book to commemorate the Centenary called “St.Keverne Methodist Church 1907 – 2007” outlining the history of Methodism in the parish and the old chapel, the story of the Fire and the opening of the new chapel in 1907. The history of the present chapel is divided into the first fifty years (1907 – 1957) and the last fifty years (1957 – 2007) and there are chapters on the Choir and Organ and Memories from the 1970 Book of Memories together with those written to celebrate the Centenary. There is also a section entitled Chapel People. The book contains 25 photographs, some of which are unique, and abounds with names of people connected in various ways with St Keverne and the chapel.
This book is a must for family historians with roots in St Keverne and for those interested in Methodist history in Cornwall.
